California Signs Anti-Robot Boss Law to Limit AI Firing Workers
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Anti-Robot Boss Act of 2026 (SB 947), setting rules for how AI can be used in human resources.
The law bans California employers from relying fully on AI-based automated decision systems to fire or discipline workers. It requires human oversight and verification when such systems are used for firing and discipline decisions. Employers must also tell workers when automated decision systems are used in those decisions.
State Senator Jerry McNerney, who proposed the bill, said no worker should be fired or disciplined by a robot boss. AI systems can boost productivity, but they can also make mistakes, show bias, and misjudge situations. The bill ensures AI in the workplace stays under human control.
