California Signs First-in-Nation AI Safety Bills
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed two AI safety bills on September 9 local time. These are the first laws of their kind in the United States.
The first bill creates the nation's first state-level framework for independent legal compliance evaluation of AI systems and models. The second establishes a state AI auditor registry with independent, transparent, and integrity standards. Together, they build a third-party independent evaluation and audit framework for AI, laying the groundwork for transparency and accountability.
Newsom said recent events have reaffirmed California's long-standing consensus: AI holds enormous potential, but its development and deployment must include effective safety measures to protect the public. He stressed that the federal government must enact strong national regulations to address the urgent situation.
