Chengdu police bust AI dating scam, 28 arrested
Police in Chengdu, China, recently shut down a scam ring that used AI to create fake dating profiles, arresting 28 suspects including their leader, Wang. A victim, Ms. Bian, paid 2,000 yuan in service fees after seeing an ad online, but the so-called 'Brother Li' was never reachable. Investigators found the company was a front, with staff only doing sales, editing, and live streams, using AI-generated male images and scripts, plus voice changers to pose as eligible men. Within a year, the group swindled over 1 million yuan from about 50 people. The suspects are now in custody. Experts suggest platforms strengthen AI content detection and users stay alert.
