China cracks down on AI crimes, solves over 170 online rumor cases in first half of year
China's Ministry of Public Security said at a press conference that criminals are increasingly using AI to commit telecom fraud and invade privacy. The police have taken multiple steps to fight back, including punishing criminal groups, setting up smart alerts, tightening industry rules, and improving laws.
In the first half of this year, police solved over 170 cases of online rumors made by AI tools, and punished more than 190 people. The National Anti-Fraud Center app now has an AI content detection feature to help people spot fake media.
The police also teamed up with other agencies to release rules requiring AI-generated content to be clearly labeled. They monitored AI models for security risks, conducting over 600 inspections and taking action against more than 30 violations.
The ministry said it will push forward a law on cybercrime prevention, study an AI security review system, and set safety standards for AI code generation and deepfake images to stop tech abuse at its root.
