China Responds to US AI Firms' Claims About China: Threat Narratives Harm Everyone
Recently, several US AI company leaders called for slowing down AI development, saying China's edge in AI could pose a national security risk. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a long post proposing a three-step framework: opening safety oversight to third parties, coordinating safety standards among frontier AI firms, and international cooperation. xAI CEO Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman both agreed.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun responded at a regular press briefing that AI development concerns the common well-being of all humanity. All parties should promote open, inclusive, beneficial, and responsible AI. Spreading threat narratives and engaging in confrontation and malicious competition will only disrupt global AI governance and serve no one's interests.
Earlier, three US agencies accused six Chinese AI companies of unauthorized model distillation. Spokesperson Mao Ning said China's AI progress is the result of high-level technological self-reliance and called for US-China cooperation. The 2026 World AI Conference in Shanghai released action plans on AI cooperation and ethics governance.
