China's Cyberspace Regulator Cracks Down on AI Misuse, Removing 5.61 Million Pieces of Illegal Content
China's cyberspace regulator announced the latest progress of its crackdown on AI misuse, removing 5.61 million pieces of illegal content, banning 49,000 accounts, and shutting down 2,400 websites and apps. The campaign targets AI-generated fake news, violent or vulgar content, impersonation, and harm to minors. Local regulators in Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Guangdong have taken steps like upgrading review systems and guiding platforms to self-check. Major platforms like Douyin, Kuaishou, Weibo, Tencent, and Baidu improved AI detection tools, including real-time face recognition. AI chatbots like Doubao, Yuanbao, Qwen, and Ernie Bot tightened content review and labeling. App stores from Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo enforced stricter rules to block bad apps. Typical cases include AI-remixed classics, fake disaster scenes, deepfake impersonation, and 'toxic cartoons' targeting kids. The regulator will keep monitoring new risks from AI-generated content.
