China's Sichuan Police Bust Case of AI-Fabricated Photo Harassment
Recently, police in Renshou County, Meishan, Sichuan, China, cracked a case where someone used AI to create fake photos for harassment. The suspect, Xu, was detained for five days for sending fabricated intimate images and threatening messages to the victim, Zhang.
Zhang and Xu met online but never in person. To push for a meeting, Xu used AI to edit photos and repeatedly sent them via WeChat, along with harassing messages. Police caught Xu within an hour of the report. Even though Xu tried to retract the messages, Zhang had saved all chats and screenshots, providing solid evidence.
Under China's Public Security Administration Punishments Law, Xu received a five-day administrative detention. Police urge the public to protect personal images and privacy to prevent misuse.
