DeepSeek plans to build a 1GW AI data center in Inner Mongolia
China's AI startup DeepSeek plans to build a huge AI data center in Inner Mongolia, with 1GW of computing power. Part of it is expected to go live by late 2026 or early 2028.
Ulanqab's average temperature is around 4°C, which helps cool down power-hungry AI servers. DeepSeek has already posted job openings there for data center delivery and operations.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said a 1GW data center with top AI chips could cost up to $50 billion, but actual costs vary by location and chip type. China's data center costs are usually lower than those in the US. DeepSeek also plans to rent extra computing power from other companies, though the chip type is still unclear.
