Ex-Google DeepMind employee warns AI could wipe out humanity
Former Google DeepMind research engineer Bilal Chughtai said on X that AI could wipe out humanity, and time to prevent it may be running out. He worked on AGI safety and alignment before leaving in July 2026.
Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon and scientist Evan Hubinger also raised alarms, with Hubinger putting the chance of AI causing human extinction within a decade at over 10%. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for slowing frontier AI development, a rare stance backed by Elon Musk and Sam Altman.
Chughtai said safely steering AI is possible but requires coordination to avoid a reckless corporate race, keeping the pace within what society can handle.
US President Donald Trump disagreed, calling the industry's push for regulation a scam.
