Ex-Tesla AI Head: AI Writes Code Like Interns Needing Human Oversight; 'Vibe Coding' Named Word of the Year
Former Tesla AI head and OpenAI founding member Andrej Karpathy stated at a Sequoia Capital talk that AI can write code well, but generated code may still be messy and needs human oversight. He compared AI agents to interns, saying humans need to handle aesthetics, judgment, and supervision.
AI-generated code is far from high-quality: bloated, full of copy-paste, with awkward and fragile abstractions. Though it works, it's not pretty—Karpathy even said seeing such code makes him feel "heartache".
Karpathy runs AI education platform Eureka Labs. Last year, he proposed "vibe coding"—developers barely write code directly, letting AI do most implementation. This concept was named Collins Dictionary's 2025 Word of the Year, spreading from tech circles to public discussions.
Karpathy believes AI isn't inherently unable to write clean code; labs just haven't prioritized this. Humans will still make high-level decisions, while AI handles low-level tasks.
