Fields Medal winner Deng Yu warns against giving up thinking to AI

Deng Yu, a Fields Medal winner and professor at the University of Chicago, recently shared his thoughts on math research in the AI era at a forum. Quoting Pascal's famous line that "man is a thinking reed," he reminded people not to give up independent thinking just because AI is here.

Deng Yu said that if people hand over the right to think entirely to AI, they lose the core of what makes them human. He believes math is the purest way to test human thinking and exploration, and it will never disappear in the AI era. If that ever happened, it would be a sad moment for all humanity.

Deng Yu won the Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians held in Philadelphia, USA, becoming one of the first Chinese mathematicians to receive the award for solving Hilbert's sixth problem. The prize is given once every four years to mathematicians under 40, and only a few dozen people have won it in nearly a century. It is known as the "Nobel Prize of mathematics."
