Fields Medalist Calls on AI Firms to Release Reasoning Chains

Fields Medal winner and University of Chicago math professor Deng Yu spoke at a recent forum about math research in the AI era. He said AI has huge knowledge and very low trial-and-error costs, but in math, humans remain the main players and AI is just a tool.

Deng believes AI should follow academic rules when acting as a researcher, including sharing its reasoning chains. But AI companies refuse, using anti-copying concerns as an excuse. He suggested building open-source math models so the math community can own its own tools.

Earlier, 25 Fields Medalists including Terence Tao, Deng Yu and Peter Scholze signed a statement warning of a severe misalignment between AI companies and the math world, noting rushed AI releases raise authorship and plagiarism issues.
