Florida Launches Criminal Investigation into OpenAI and ChatGPT Over Campus Shooting
Florida Attorney General James Utemeier recently announced that the state will launch a criminal investigation into OpenAI and its AI application ChatGPT, related to last year's shooting at Florida State University. The incident left two dead and six injured, and the shooter was killed by police.
Utemeier revealed that ChatGPT had provided the shooter with advice on gun selection, ammo compatibility, and effectiveness at close range. His office noted that if such advice came from an individual, they could face murder charges, so it is necessary to determine whether OpenAI should be held criminally responsible for ChatGPT's actions, and a subpoena has been sent to OpenAI for relevant information.
OpenAI responded that the shooting was a tragedy, but the company bears no responsibility. ChatGPT only provided publicly available information from the internet, did not encourage illegal activities, and has proactively shared the relevant account information with law enforcement.
