Ford CEO: AI Will Be a Partner for Blue-Collar Workers, Knowledge Jobs More at Risk
Ford CEO Jim Farley says AI will mostly become a partner for workers in factories and repair shops, helping them handle complex tasks, learn skills faster, and ease the shortage of skilled workers. He believes most of these technical jobs won't be easily replaced by AI.
Farley points out that AI will likely hit repetitive, highly standardized knowledge jobs first, such as finance spreadsheet work, call centers, and junior programming roles, rather than electricians, repair technicians, and factory mechanics.
Inside Ford, more than 10,000 technicians have seen their work expand from maintaining conveyor lines to repairing robots, handling fiber optics, and maintaining automated equipment. Ford also uses AI and augmented reality to guide technicians, for example helping dealership techs remove the engine from a Super Duty pickup faster.
