India Now Has More ChatGPT Users Than Any Other Country, Including the US

Prabhjeet Singh, head of OpenAI in India, says India now has more weekly ChatGPT users than any other country, including the US. The user count has doubled since January. India also has the most ChatGPT student users in the world and has become the company's largest consumer market.

The growth came from low prices. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Go in August 2025 for less than $5 a month, and users in India who sign up from November 4 get it free for a year. Singh said future growth depends on language and ease of use, with focus on Hindi and local languages, voice features, and an Android-first app for budget phones.

To support this, OpenAI is teaming up with HyperVault, a data center business under TCS, to expand computing power in India, starting at 100 megawatts and able to grow to 1 gigawatt. Its models can also be accessed through Amazon Bedrock, with requests handled inside India.
