ByteDance Blocks External AI Access to Its Core Code and Docs
ByteDance is tightening its rules on external AI tools. Earlier, its security team already banned third-party AI coding software like Cursor and Windsurf in batches, offering its own coding assistant Trae as a replacement.
Reports say that starting this month, ByteDance will block external AI access to all L4-level code repositories and Feishu documents across the whole company. AI accounts like Claude and Codex bought by individual employees can no longer be used for internal work.
In ByteDance's ranking system, L4 usually means team leads or junior managers, and their code repositories hold the core assets and underlying structure of nearly all its businesses. Tech VP Hong Dingkun said internally that any leak of L3 or higher content would have serious consequences.
Founder Zhang Yiming also said at a Seed team meeting that the company won't rely on AI distillation to improve its models, even if it means falling behind rivals for now. This new ban further narrows the space for external AI tools inside ByteDance.
