Jack Dorsey’s Long Essay: AI to Replace Hierarchical Coordination, Ending 2000 Years of Organizational Hierarchy Dependence
Twitter founder Jack Dorsey and Roelof Botha co-authored a long essay titled 'From Hierarchy to Intelligence', proposing that using AI to replace human hierarchical coordination will become a common model for future organizations, ending 2000 years of hierarchy dependence.
Traditional hierarchy, rooted in the military and industrial eras, is limited by humans' span of control (only 3-8 people can be managed effectively). It is essentially an information routing protocol, but more layers significantly slow down information flow and decision-making speed. Block is trying to use AI to completely replace hierarchical coordination functions, transforming the company into a 'company built as an intelligent agent'—humans focus on facing reality, intuition, and ethics, while AI handles coordination, alignment, and proactive decision-making.
The essay proposes two key AI models: the company world model (using internal decision records, code, etc. to grasp operational status) and the customer world model (using transaction data from Cash App, Square, etc. to understand customers' real economic conditions) to replace middle management.
