MediaTek-Google Collaboration to Drive Quantum Growth in AI Server ASIC Shipments in 2 Years
Counterpoint Research reports that MediaTek, via collaboration with Google, is expected to see a quantum leap in AI server ASIC shipment volume within two years. By 2028, MediaTek may deliver 5 million Google TPU chips, capturing a 26% market share and becoming the second-largest player in AI ASIC design services after Broadcom.
For Google's TPU v8t, Google handles core computing chip design and HBM supply coordination, while MediaTek provides I/O chips. The two parties are also advancing the TPU v8e project, currently in design integration and verification phase, with mass production expected by late 2027 and volume shipments in 2028, possibly using Intel's EMIB-T 2.5D packaging technology.
Google's shift to this model helps cut chip design costs and avoid HBM procurement markups, optimizing cost structure.
