Meta CEO Zuckerberg: Layoffs Due to Increased AI Capital Expenditure, Not AI Replacing Employees
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated at an all-hands meeting that the company's planned layoffs are due to increased AI capital expenditure, not AI replacing employees. He noted that Meta's main costs are computing infrastructure and personnel expenses; more investment in AI means less budget for personnel, so the company needs to downsize appropriately.
Zuckerberg emphasized that the layoffs are unrelated to AI-native team restructuring or AI agents replacing jobs. However, Meta's move to push forward AI transformation without fully explaining layoffs, while launching a plan to track employees' mouse movements, clicks, and keyboard inputs to train AI agents, has caused internal dissatisfaction.
Meta plans to cut about 10% of its staff by May 20, with more layoffs possible in the second half of the year. Zuckerberg admitted he cannot predict future trends for the next three years but will share more information soon.
