Meta's AI Assistant Muse Builds a Profile for Every Contact You Know
Meta's AI assistant Muse has gone viral, with millions of users linking it to their bank accounts and messaging apps. Recently, independent AI safety researcher Karan Joshi got Muse to output its own files through a normal chat, revealing its system prompts and instructions, which raised concerns about how it collects data. The instructions show Muse creates a separate profile for each contact in a user's life, running every hour. It gathers details about family, partners, friends, colleagues and people users follow, covering closeness, key dates, past events and relationship advice. The system is told to only use 'evidence' it can access and never make things up. Oxford scholar Carissa Veliz said people give AI far more information than they get back, and its inferences and data combining are also worrying. Meta replied that the files are open on purpose for transparency, the data comes from public content and what users choose to share, and users can clear memories or cut access anytime.
