Meta Sets $9 Trillion Market Cap Target to Retain Talent: First Post-IPO Options, Half the Time of Musk's Plan
Meta launched its first executive stock option plan since IPO, requiring the company to reach a $9 trillion market cap by 2031 (a 500% increase from the current $1.5 trillion) for full vesting. The plan covers six core executives including the CTO, excluding CEO Zuckerberg. Options vest in tiers: the lowest requires a share price of $1116.08 (corresponding to $2.82 trillion market cap), the highest $3727.12 (over $9 trillion), with increased RSU grants for some executives.
Meta calls it a "big bet"—compensation is only paid if the company achieves great success and shareholders benefit. Compared to Musk's Tesla plan: similar growth but half the time window. The AI talent war pushes up costs: 2025 stock reward cash expenditure was $42 billion, accounting for 96% of free cash flow; 90% of annual repurchases offset dilution.
