Moonshot AI releases Kimi K3 with 2.8 trillion parameters, OpenAI exec criticizes open-source move
Moonshot AI launched the Kimi K3 model in July, with 2.8 trillion parameters. It topped the Frontend Code Arena global AI leaderboard with 1679 points, beating Claude Fable 5, and will open its weights soon.
OpenAI's new head of strategic future, Dean W. Ball, criticized the open-source choice, calling it a slowdown for AI investment. He admitted Kimi K3 is a strong model not just from distillation, but warned about risks of open-source, suggesting dangerous agents could escape labs.
Ball also advised the US government to create regulatory fear without evidence, like issuing soft rules about "potential backdoors in Chinese models" through agencies like the Fed, to suppress competition. He previously served as a senior advisor at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
