OpenAI CEO Altman Calls for Global AI Standards at UN
OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman spoke at the United Nations on the 23rd, calling for global AI standards. He positioned himself as a "pragmatic centrist," pushing for shared AI safety standards that neither hinder innovation nor let a few companies hold too much power.
Altman attended a UN Security Council meeting in person, where diplomats gathered to discuss artificial intelligence. Anthropic head Dario Amodei joined via video. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the annual UN General Assembly debate in New York.
The risk of AI going out of control was a major concern at this year's assembly. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of AI dangers on the 22nd and called for global cooperation. Altman had previously discussed building a US-led global body and outlined his vision in a blog post this week.
