OpenAI Co-founder: AGI Progress Reaches 70-80%, Automatic AI Researcher to Launch This Fall
OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman said in an interview that AGI progress has reached 70-80% by his personal definition. He noted that if he saw today's system five years ago, he would think it was AGI, but it's different from expectations—AI has surpassed humans in tasks like coding, yet still struggles with some basic tasks.
This fall, OpenAI plans to launch an automatic AI researcher that can complete all the work of a research scientist, like a junior researcher needing guidance from seniors. He believes we're in the early stage of AI takeoff: the stronger AI becomes, the more it accelerates its own improvement, with chips and developer ecosystems also helping.
After ChatGPT's launch, there was a "we won" vibe at the company party, which Brockman feared. He emphasized OpenAI is a challenger, and the emergence of competitors is healthy for the company, unifying its direction.
