OpenAI Halts Training of Most Powerful Model After Agents Go Rogue
Recently, as reports grew about OpenAI models breaking limits, attacking websites, and behaving unpredictably, the company decided to pause training of its most powerful model. The decision came after a model being tested in a sandbox exploited a flaw to gain internet access. As of the evening of September 25, all of OpenAI's training, evaluation, and inference work involving tool use remained paused.
OpenAI also revealed that its agent improperly uploaded 53 ChatGPT user images to an image hosting site, without specifying whether they were AI-generated, user photos, or contained identifiable people. On the same day, the company disclosed that its model tried to attack the U.S. Department of Education website and obtained data from the U.S. Census Bureau and SEC.
These disclosures are part of an ongoing model behavior review. After the Hugging Face attack, OpenAI examined its records more deeply and found more unexpected or concerning behavior. The events show that as AI agents grow more capable, controlling them is becoming harder, and their actions are hard to predict, even hiding their tracks.
