OpenAI Hires Former US Army Secretary as Security Advisor
OpenAI has hired Daniel Driscoll, the former US Army Secretary, as its senior advisor for national security and modernization. He will help bring AI into national security and cybersecurity, working with leaders from government, academia, and industry.
Driscoll stepped down as Army Secretary in August after clashing with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over staffing and leadership decisions. At 38, he became the youngest Army Secretary in US history. He is also a close friend of Vice President JD Vance from their days at Yale Law School.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the US has a rare chance to work with other countries to spread AI built on democratic values. OpenAI once banned military use of its technology but lifted that ban in 2024. In February, it agreed to deploy its AI models on the US Defense Department's classified networks.
