OpenAI launches always-on agent dots powered by GPT-6 Astra
At OpenAI DevDay 2026, OpenAI officially launched dots, an always-on AI agent. It uses four cartoon characters and can help users plan schedules, design websites, test apps, and edit notes. Over time, it learns a user's work habits and priorities, and can report urgent overnight messages before the day starts. dots can also handle everyday tasks like booking flights or dinner, and supports voice calls.
dots is powered by OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra model and works with more than 4,000 apps on the ChatGPT platform. It has its own cloud computer and can take on projects and push them forward on its own. Users can reach it through ChatGPT, SMS, Slack, or Teams. OpenAI calls its background research "proactive research," but it has limited permissions and cannot send messages or control a browser.
dots is rolling out to eligible Pro and Business Premium users in supported markets starting now. Enterprise users can try the beta after admins enable it. The first dot is included in Pro and Business Premium plans at no extra cost, and chats with dots do not count toward ChatGPT usage limits.
