OpenAI Launches Astra for Law, a Legal AI Platform with 54% Accuracy
OpenAI has released Astra for Law, a legal-focused AI foundation platform. Its legal search index covers over 230 million URLs and includes the CourtListener case database, which covers more than 99.9% of published US case law.
On Vals AI's legal research benchmark of 200 US legal questions, Astra for Law scored 54.0% accuracy at the highest reasoning level, compared to 38.7% for GPT-6 Astra using only web search. For case-law-oriented questions, it found 24% more reference cases, and in audited target paragraph sets, it identified up to 54% more relevant passages from correct court opinions.
The service is not an AI lawyer. It mainly serves lawyers and legal software companies, helping them separate core judicial reasoning from obiter dicta, find adverse precedents, and analyze how contract terms allocate risk, aiming to improve trial win rates.
