OpenAI plans to buy Google TPU chips
OpenAI is planning to officially bring in Google Cloud's TPU AI chips. A job posting shows the US AI company is hiring engineers to optimize its models for TPUs, and sources have confirmed the purchase plan.
Google TPU played a big role in OpenAI's early days, but as the business grew, it moved to NVIDIA chips, later added chips from AMD, Cerebras and AWS, and has been building its own chip called Jalapeno.
In July 2025, OpenAI said it was only running early tests on Google TPU, with no large-scale rollout planned. That stance has now clearly changed, showing its computing power options are expanding.
