Berkeley Professor Drops Graded Homework Over AI Misuse
Richard Borcherds, a math professor and Fields Medal winner at the University of California, Berkeley, says he will no longer assign graded homework. He believes AI misuse has made it pointless.\n\nHe says it is now almost impossible to tell if students did the work themselves or used AI. So he now tests students with in-person exams where no electronic devices are allowed. He also noticed online exam scores have risen sharply.\n\nAccording to him, grading by correct answers pushes students to use AI instead of solving problems honestly, and grading AI answers is a waste. The school once considered AI detection software but found it unreliable, so it now lets professors set their own AI rules.
