Qi Wei launches AI digital avatar, stars in AI comic drama 'Doomsday Summer'
Singer and actress Qi Wei announced in August that she launched her official digital avatar, allowing standardized AI authorization of her image. Her avatar will star in the AI comic drama 'Doomsday Summer' as the character Han Qingxia. In an interview, Qi Wei addressed the controversy around 'selling her face', clarifying that she did not open her likeness to everyone but only authorized a specific film project she is working with, with set time limits, scope, review, and accountability. She hopes this move gives the market more confidence and believes that standardized authorization helps distinguish legal from illegal use. Qi Wei pointed out that even without authorization, the risk of misuse exists, and Chinese law already protects the AI images of public figures, which will improve in the future. She believes that her real self and digital self should be two independent yet collaborative creative lines—real self for complex emotions and digital self for high-concept content breaking physical limits. Regarding AI's impact on new actors, Qi Wei thinks AI will first affect those in standardized, repetitive roles. Previously, actors like Matthew McConaughey and Nicolas Cage also shared their views on AI actors.
