Reuters poll: 73% of Americans worry AI safety measures are not enough
A new Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that 73% of Americans think AI companies are not doing enough to prevent serious harm to society. Only 24% believe AI companies have provided adequate safety measures.
39% of respondents say AI is having a negative impact on society, up 3 points from last month and the highest level since the survey began in March. Only 11% see a positive impact. Most respondents think the US federal government should play an important role in setting AI safety standards.
About 55% say slowing down AI development is a good thing, while only 13% say it is bad. 69% have heard about recent calls from major AI companies for stronger regulation.
73% say ensuring AI develops safely and responsibly is more important than the US leading the world in AI. The online poll covered 1,277 US adults, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
