Shanghai Police Crack Down on Staged Car Crash Scams, 6 Arrested
Behind an ordinary car scrape may hide a carefully planned staged accident scam. Such traffic fraud is hard to spot, and most drivers notice nothing wrong because the payouts are small.
Shanghai police used big data analysis and multi-force joint operations to crack down on such scams, arresting 6 suspects. One suspect surnamed Zhu drove around Huangpu, Xuhui and Pudong districts, targeting cars that were changing lanes to cause minor scrapes, with up to 5 cases in a single day.
The task force built a complete chain of evidence through public video footage, victim statements and insurance records. Zhu committed over 200 cases since 2025, claiming only a few hundred to 1,000 yuan each time, involving over 600,000 yuan in total.
Zhu has been criminally detained and the case is under further investigation. Police remind drivers to call the police and keep photos or video evidence if the other party pushes for a private deal or refuses formal procedures.
