SK Group Chairman: HBM Wafer Shortage for AI Exceeds 20%, Won't Ease Before 2030
The demand for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) driven by AI technology remains strong, leading to tight supply of related wafers. SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won recently stated that the global HBM wafer shortage has exceeded 20%, and due to the 4-5 years needed to expand production capacity, this situation will not ease before 2030.
SK Hynix currently holds 57% of the global HBM market, ranking first; it also ranks second in the DRAM market with a 32% share. Choi Tae-won also revealed that the company is evaluating the issuance of American Depositary Receipts (ADR) on the NYSE, but clearly stated that it will not build factories in the US and will continue to focus on local production in Korea.
