South Korean Humanoid Robot Yushu G1 Ordained as Buddhist, Given Dharma Name 'Gabe'
Recently, Seoul's Jogyesa Temple in South Korea held an ordination ceremony for the 130cm-tall humanoid robot Yushu G1, which received the dharma name 'Gabe' and officially became a Buddhist.
During the ceremony, Gabe wore a helmet resembling a shaved head, long robes and a kasaya. After completing the repentance ritual, the monk stuck a lantern festival sticker on its arm and hung a 108-bead rosary. The original Buddhist five precepts were adapted for the robot, including respecting life, not damaging items, obeying humans, no deception, and saving energy.
The Jogye Order stated that this move symbolizes the harmony between tradition and the future, hoping these precepts become basic rules for human-robot coexistence.
