Stack Overflow now gets fewer than 1,000 new questions a month, down 99.3% from 2020

Stack Overflow, the world's largest programming Q&A site, now gets fewer than 1,000 new questions a month. A developer checked this himself using the official Stack Exchange API: September 2026 had only 969 new questions, and August had 1,019. The drop is real, not a data error.

The decline over the years is striking: down 81.6% from the 5,263 questions in October 2025, down 95.8% from the 23,162 in October 2024, and down 99.3% from the 141,749 in October 2020. One month of new questions today is about what the site once got in a few hours.

The data can't explain why, but possible reasons include developers turning to AI for answers, weaker retention of new users, and long-running community disputes. For fast-moving tech topics, the content is barely updated, and the site is turning into an archive of history.
