Synopsys and OpenAI Team Up to Build GPT-Synopsys for Chip Design

Synopsys, a US chip design software company, announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI. The two companies signed a broad multi-year agreement to jointly develop the GPT-Synopsys model.

The model combines OpenAI's advanced AI capabilities with Synopsys' EDA tools and agentic AI abilities to carry out semiconductor design workflows. Once integrated, the model will become a native expert user of EDA tools, helping engineers explore more design options, optimize power, performance and area (PPA), and deliver more complex designs faster.

Engineers can delegate design goals to agents running the tools. These agents interpret results, make changes and iterate, ultimately producing verification results for engineers to review. To develop this specialized model, OpenAI will get licensed access to Synopsys' trusted EDA tools. The two companies will work closely on R&D and joint go-to-market plans, using a shared revenue framework.
