U.S. Senator Warren Questions DoD's Labeling of Anthropic as Supply Chain Risk: Possible Political Retaliation, Demands OpenAI Contract Disclosure
U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren sent a letter to the Secretary of Defense, stating that the Department of Defense's decision to label Anthropic as a "supply chain risk" appears to be political retaliation. She noted that the DoD could have chosen to terminate the contract or use Anthropic's technology in non-classified systems, but instead took a harsher labeling measure.
On the same day, Warren wrote to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, demanding the disclosure of specific terms of the agreement with the DoD. She expressed concern that the DoD might force companies to provide tools for monitoring citizens and deploying fully autonomous weapons without sufficient safeguards, emphasizing that she cannot assess safety clauses without seeing the full contract.
Hours after Anthropic was blacklisted, OpenAI announced an agreement with the DoD. Anthropic has sued the Trump administration, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for this Tuesday in San Francisco federal court. Multiple tech companies and legal rights organizations have filed amicus briefs in support of Anthropic.
