US Nonprofits Launch 'AI Dividend' Plan to Provide Basic Income for AI-Displaced Workers
US nonprofits AI Commons Project and What We Will have launched the 'AI Dividend' basic income plan to help groups who lost jobs or saw sharp income drops due to AI adoption. The project has raised an initial $300,000, and will first support 25 to 50 workers with $1000 per month for one year.
Project initiators note that AI has significantly impacted entry-level programming roles. After companies adopted AI coding assistants like Microsoft Copilot and Anthropic Claude, demand for entry-level positions nearly dried up. Even if students find jobs, their work often reduces to low-value repetitive tasks like proofreading AI-generated code snippets.
While the plan aims to distribute $3 million in 2026, its funding source is uncertain. Organizers hope to lobby profitable AI companies for donations, but face great resistance. Scholars like Geoffrey Hinton support basic income plans, but Anthropic CEO warns that simply giving cash may not solve deep structural imbalances and social-psychological issues from unemployment.
