8 months after GPT-4o retired, fans still push OpenAI to release its weights
It has been about 8 months since GPT-4o was retired from ChatGPT, but the Keep4o fan movement goes on. On October 23, OpenAI will shut down its earliest API snapshot, the version named after its debut date, 2024-05-13. Other versions in the API remain available.
On October 7, a supporter proposed an archive-style open weights plan on X, asking OpenAI to release the trained model under a proper license, without training data or internal tools. A petition on Change.org has gathered over 23,000 signatures.
GPT-4o launched in May 2024. It won loyal users with real-time voice chat that can be interrupted and picks up on tone, and its Ghibli-style image feature once brought a million new users in an hour. OpenAI says only about 0.1% of users still pick it daily.
In contrast, Anthropic has promised to keep the weights of all released models, and the retired Claude Opus 3 is still open to paid users. OpenAI has not responded to the calls.
