AI Deepfake Voice Scams Surge: Over 25% of Americans Received Calls Mimicking Acquaintances, Multi-Nation Survey Shows
Have you ever received a suspicious call mimicking an acquaintance's voice? AI deepfake voice scams are becoming increasingly common these days. A survey covering six countries including the US, UK, and Canada shows that such scams are no longer rare, and it's getting harder for people to tell the difference between real and fake voices.
Data reveals that over the past 12 months, a quarter of Americans received deepfake voice calls, and 24% couldn't reliably distinguish AI voices from real ones. Scammers use AI to clone voices and impersonate relatives or trusted contacts, with the elderly being the main target—their average loss is $1298, three times that of young people.
In response to this trend, 72% of users call for stricter government regulations requiring telecom operators to enhance protection. Some users believe operators should take partial responsibility for scam losses, and nearly 40% say they will consider switching providers if their current operator fails to offer effective protection.
