AI Public Sentiment Polarized: Over 40% of U.S. Citizens Hold Negative Views
Public attitudes toward AI in the U.S. are polarized. A survey shows only 26% of U.S. voters hold positive views of AI, while 46% are negative. Recently, this sentiment led to an extreme incident: a man from Texas traveled to San Francisco and threw a molotov cocktail at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's residence. His manifesto warned that AI would cause human extinction. Some netizens on social platforms supported the act, reflecting strong resistance.
Chris Lehane, OpenAI's global affairs head, called for restraint in AI discussions, saying some irresponsible claims have real consequences. He emphasized the industry needs to explain AI's positive value more. Meanwhile, data shows AI's impact on the overall job market hasn't appeared at the macro level: the U.S. added 178,000 jobs in March, unemployment fell to 4.3%, and short-term job growth still outpaces AI-related layoffs.
