Amazon may sell its AI chips to other companies
Amazon is considering selling its own AI chips, called Trainium, to other companies. Right now, these chips are only available through Amazon's cloud service AWS. Peter DeSantis, Amazon's AI boss, said in an interview in Paris that they've started talking about selling the physical chips to outside businesses.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy mentioned in an April letter to shareholders that demand for Trainium chips in the cloud is booming, and they might sell whole batches of chips to third parties in the future. DeSantis said the latest Trainium3 chips are already pretty much sold out, and the next Trainium4 chips are getting a lot of attention. He doesn't think selling chips will hurt AWS's AI cloud business, saying there's still a lot of room to grow in AI computing.
Google is already shipping its own AI hardware, which is giving Nvidia's AI GPU business some new competition.
