Anthropic Signs Its First Content Licensing Deal with AP
AI company Anthropic has signed its first content licensing deal with the Associated Press. Under the deal, its Claude chatbot can show AP's election results in real time on US midterm election night, with the source credited. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Before this, Anthropic had refused such deals with publishers, saying its web crawlers scraping content counted as fair use. Some publishers blocked the company's crawlers to push it to the negotiating table.
Rival OpenAI has already made similar deals with more than a dozen media outlets, including Axel Springer, News Corp, and The Atlantic. AP was also one of the first licensing partners for Google and OpenAI.
Without fresh content from publishers, Claude had limits on answering news-related questions. This deal should help close that gap. Anthropic is now moving toward going public.
