Anthropic Sues U.S. Pentagon: No Ties to China, Should Not Be Labeled Supply Chain Risk
U.S. AI startup Anthropic filed a lawsuit against the Pentagon on March 9, accusing it of misusing the "supply chain risk" label. This label is typically applied to companies linked to foreign adversaries like China or Russia, not U.S. domestic firms. Anthropic claims the move harms its business and violates its First Amendment rights.
The conflict stemmed from a $200 million contract negotiation: Anthropic demanded the Pentagon ensure its AI model Claude would not be used for domestic mass surveillance or autonomous lethal weapons, but the Pentagon argued private companies have no right to set government policies. After talks broke down, Anthropic was labeled a supply chain risk.
Anthropic now faces contract cancellations and revenue losses. The Silicon Valley tech community (including OpenAI and Google employees) supports its lawsuit, saying the Pentagon's action will harm U.S. AI competitiveness. Anthropic remains willing to negotiate with the Pentagon to help migrate systems to other AI platforms.
