Blackstone plans $30 billion investment in Japan AI data centers over 3-5 years
Blackstone, the alternative asset management giant, announced plans to invest $30 billion in Japan's AI data center sector over the next 3 to 5 years. The company has already developed 500MW of data centers in Japan, and the new investment will add over 1GW of capacity.
Blackstone President Jonathan Gray said the AI investment environment is still in its early stages, and the real risk is a shortage of computing power, not a bubble in infrastructure. He believes companies like Google and Amazon could challenge Nvidia's dominance in the AI chip market.
Gray also noted that AI will pose serious challenges for white-collar businesses, and executives must adapt to the new era. Meanwhile, the healthcare industry could see major changes driven by AI. This month, Blackstone, Apollo, and Broadcom formed the AI XPV platform, aiming to provide over 20GW of computing power to frontier AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic by 2028.
