BMW's Leipzig Factory in Germany Introduces AI Robots for Electric Vehicle Production
After piloting humanoid robots at its Spartanburg factory in the US last year, BMW has officially introduced AI robots at its iFACTORY in Leipzig, Germany, to handle screw assembly for electric vehicles. Previously, the Figure 02 robots used at the Spartanburg factory had participated in the production of 30,000 X3 cars, mainly responsible for precise positioning and welding of sheet metal parts. The newly introduced Hexagon AEON robots, produced by Zurich-based Hexagon Robotics, are equipped with AI motion control systems and environmental sensors. They can independently assess the environment and make decisions, such as avoiding obstacles to complete tasks. Although the humanoid design brings complexity, it helps engineers plan workflows more easily and directly convert human actions into robot instructions.
