California launches AI job loss tracker to monitor labor market
California Governor Gavin Newsom launched the "California AI-Unemployment Tracker (CAIT)" system to monitor AI's impact on the local labor market. Updated monthly, it cross-references unemployment insurance claims with how much each job is affected by AI, serving as an early warning tool.
The first report shows that as of May, California hasn't seen a big spike in unemployment claims due to AI, meaning AI hasn't caused mass layoffs yet. But since ChatGPT 3.5 launched in late 2022, workers with college degrees or more, in jobs easy for AI to replace, have filed more claims—especially in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Professional services and information industries saw the biggest changes. Professional services had a short-term rise after ChatGPT 3.5, then dropped but stayed high; the information industry returned to pre-generative AI levels by late 2025. The state says the tracker isn't saying AI causes job loss, but aims to spot who might be hit first, offering job help, training, and support.
US media see this tool as turning "AI taking jobs" guesses into measurable data for future policies.
