ChatGPT Classic desktop app will shut down on January 30, 2027

OpenAI has notified users of its old desktop app, ChatGPT Classic, that the app will stop working on January 30, 2027. When users open it, a message will pop up with a link to download the new ChatGPT app. Full chat history moves with the account, so conversations continue in the new app. The change came after OpenAI launched a new desktop app that brings Codex and ChatGPT together, with three parts: Chat, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. The old app was renamed ChatGPT Classic, and the update keeps existing Codex tasks and projects. OpenAI will also let a small group of users test merging Chat and Work, so people can go from an idea to a finished task in one place. Usage limits for ChatGPT and Codex will become one shared quota, and how much it uses depends on the model and task complexity.
