China's Regulator Moves to Protect Portraits and Voices in AI Short Dramas
China's television regulator held a meeting on September 2 to discuss how to protect people's rights over their images and voices in AI-generated short dramas. The meeting agreed that while AI brings innovation to online content, it must respect basic personal rights.
It was decided that any use of someone's image or voice needs clear permission. To determine if infringement happens, factors like the content, context, and intent should be considered. Platforms and producers must set up risk controls, including getting approval upfront, screening during production, and keeping records after release.
Hosted by the regulator, the meeting included 17 companies like iQiyi, Tencent, Youku, and Kuaishou, aiming to ensure AI short dramas develop legally and healthily.
